reflecting on everyday grace

Evening Candlelight

One of my favorite accompaniments to a sweet, quiet night to myself is a simple, subtle candle.  This past weekend, I wrote a little poem about this humble, evening companion, with whom I identify.

Evening candlelight

Evening silence

flickers in my heart

like a candle

whose fragile pulse

knows life,

ponders death,

and even though

the possibility of

being snuffed out

is real,

she goes on blazing,

as her fear turns into light.

And so, friends, when fear and darkness sweep in, as they do in this human life, we, like this candle, must remember that we are not made for darkness; we are made to illuminate the darkness.

May the Light hold us close — our steady, hopeful, and eternal flame.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”

-John 1:5
